A 79-year-old woman from Hesperus was killed in an accident Friday afternoon on Colorado Highway 140 near Mile Marker 13, the Colorado State Patrol reports.

A Hesperus woman was killed in a rollover accident on Colorado Highway 140 on Friday afternoon.

Trooper Josh Lewis with the Colorado State Patrol said the woman, 79, was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe. The vehicle blocked both lanes of traffic after coming to rest.

There was no information available about the condition of her passenger, a 78-year-old man from Hesperus.

The state patrol could not release the identities of either person until their families were notified.

The state patrol first received a report of the accident at 4:15 p.m.

The accident took place at Mile Marker 13, about 13 miles north of the New Mexico state line and just north of County Road 128. The highway was closed shortly after the call came in and was expected to reopen Friday evening.

Early reports indicated the accident might have been caused by a semi-trailer rolling over on the vehicle, but that was not true, Lewis said.

“The semi did not roll over or roll on it,” he said. “At this point, I don’t know if the truck was involved at all or just on scene.”

In addition to the Colorado State Patrol, Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District, Durango Fire & Rescue Authority and La Plata County Sheriff’s Office responded.
