A 25-year-old New Mexico man was arrested in San Juan County, N.M., on Monday on a charge of rape stemming from an incident in Durango.

Bryan Bunion of Kirtland is suspected of criminal sexual penetration after an incident at a party on the weekend of Sept. 14-15.

Durango Police Department Detective Joseph Farmer contacted the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office to ask for assistance in arresting Bunion.

“We were told that several individuals had been partying together in Durango,” said San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Detective Tim Nyce. “At some point, one of the females present passed out.”

Bunion is accused of raping the woman after she lost consciousness. Another woman happened to walk into the room while the sexual assault was taking place.

“The witness knew Bunion and was able to provide the Durango Police Department with his name and a physical description,” Nyce said.

Bunion was arrested at his home without incident. He has been held at the San Juan County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond since his arrest.

Farmer said Bunion is likely to be extradited to La Plata County today, but the timing of the arraignment and potential charges will be determined by the 6th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

“The victim and the witness are both continuing forward with the case,” Farmer said. “But I can’t say much about the details because this is an ongoing investigation.”
