Farmington Hill house fire sends 1 to Mercy

A house near the top of Farmington Hill along U.S. Highway 550 sustained damage from a fire Tuesday evening.

One person was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center on Tuesday evening after firefighters responded to a two-story home that caught fire near the top of Farmington Hill.

On Tuesday night, Karola Hanks, fire marshal with Durango Fire & Rescue Authority, said she did not have a name, age or condition of the person who was transported to Mercy.

Hanks said she did not know the number of family members who lived in the home in the 15700 block of U.S. Highway 550, and she was unsure if other family members were in the house at the time of the fire.

Efforts to combat the fire created traffic delays Tuesday night on Highway 550 that were expected to last well into the night, Hanks said.

The fire, reported about 5:30 p.m., was confined to the second story of a large, single-family home at the end of a long, narrow driveway, she said.

Firefighters were working to ferry water to the home, Hanks said. The driveway was about a third of a mile long, and tankers had to be used to supply the water.

Hanks said the lack of water meant a large number of firefighters were required to fight the blaze.

The cause of the fire was undetermined, and a full investigation into the cause will get underway today.
