FLC women bolster midfield

Skyhawks add three on Signing Day

The central midfield received a boost for the Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team on national signing day.

The Skyhawks received letters of intent from Savannah Boarman, Jessica Singleton and Kyleigh Wierenga, head coach Damian Clarke announced Wednesday in a news release.

Singleton hails from Hobbs, N.M., and led the state with 36 goals her senior year and 38 as a junior.

She also had 23 assists over the last two seasons.

“Jessica is from my own high school rival, and she reminds me of those battles I once had,” Clarke said. “This is an attacking player with a lot of potential.”

Singleton was a four-year starter at Hobbs High School as a central midfielder and a three-time District 4-5A Player of the Year.

She played with the New Mexico Olympic Development Program and played for the Rio Vista SC club team.

Wierenga plays central midfielder and center back as a four-year starter at Liberty High School in Colorado Springs.

She also was a member of the Pride Predator 96 club team that won four consecutive state championships between 2008 and 2012.

“Kyleigh is a player who we feel is a pretty complete footballer, and she will be an excellent student-athlete for Fort Lewis College,” Clarke said. “She brings more than a few state-championship experiences and a well-respected club soccer pedigree in Pride Soccer Club. I’m excited to add a dynamic 5-10 athlete who likes to have the ball and is very good at getting it back.”

The Skyhawks also picked up Boarman, a defender from Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs.

She helped lead the Indians to the 2013 CHSAA 4A state championship and was named MVP of the championship game after the team lost to Valor Christian in 2012.

Boarman also spent some time in the central midfield and picked up one assist.

“Savannah will most likely add to our back line, as she is comfortable on the ball and an athletic player,” Clarke said.

FLC qualified for its fifth NCAA Tournament last season and will open the 2014 season Sept. 4 against Texas Woman’s University.
