Southwest Colorado rich in library resources

Congratulations to the Pine River Valley Library for its recognition as the Best Small Library in America in 2014. This is a wonderful honor and certainly deserved by this extraordinary library in Bayfield. I absolutely cherish libraries and believe those of us who live in this region are blessed by an abundance of great libraries.

In addition to the Pine River Valley Library we have Durango Public Library, Durango Arts Center Library, Ignacio Community Library, Ruby M. Sisson Library in Pagosa Springs. At Fort Lewis College, we have the John F. Reed Library and the Delaney Southwest Research Library and Archives. I would be remiss if I didn’t include the wonderful school libraries where many students are introduced to the magic and magnificence of a library.

Lastly, many people have wonderful private libraries that they cultivate and often share their treasures with friends. In reflecting on my early childhood, I can say libraries shaped my life and perhaps set the course for my curiosity of the world. The Durango Herald was right that a library is the hub of a community.

Perhaps the value of a library is more than we realize. I applaud and thank those who make our local and regional libraries open to all people. The Roman statesman and scholar; Cicero, was noted with this great quote. “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” I think he was on to something.
