7 Durango girls run away, 6 found

Seven Durango-area girls are suspected of fleeing their homes this week in a rash of unrelated runaway cases, police said Wednesday.

Three girls were found in Las Vegas, two were found in Aztec, one returned home, and one remained missing as of 6 p.m. Wednesday, said Lt. Ray Shupe, spokesman with the Durango Police Department.

He declined to name the girls, saying it is not considered a criminal investigation.

“We’ve been actively working the case,” Shupe said.

The three girls found in Las Vegas were being held by law enforcement until they can be returned to Durango, Shupe said. All three ran away together, he said.

As of Wednesday night, police had not made contact with the two girls in Aztec, Shupe said.

“We believe (they) are connected, but we are still trying to catch up with them,” he wrote in an email. “We don’t have them in law enforcement custody yet.”

A Facebook page was created to help find Kristin Aas (Slade), who was described as a 17-year-old Durango girl with blonde hair and blue eyes.

A missing poster also was widely distributed on social-media websites, including one created to find Dylan Redwine, who went missing in November 2012.

Christine Aas, Kristin’s stepmother, said Kristin appeared to have walked into school Tuesday morning and walked right out a back door.

The girl’s mother, who lives in Houston, was en route to pick up her daughter in Las Vegas.

All the girls are 15 to 17 years old, Shupe said. The police department was working with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

“We don’t have any information that there was any foul play in any of them,” Shupe said. “If we had any information like that we would have issued an Amber alert.”

Christine Aas said police officers told her they have never dealt with so many runaway children at once.

“It’s a shame that so many girls are missing,” she said. “Why (Tuesday)? What’s going on?”
