Bats not enough for BHS in 17-10 loss loss

Six errors sink Wolverines’ chances

Familiarity may be breeding some contempt between the Bayfield High School baseball team and the junior varsity team at Piedra Vista High School in Farmington, N.M.

The teams played for the third time this season Thursday in Farmington, and they slugged out a combined 27 runs as Piedra Vista came away with a 17-10 victory.

BHS (5-3) committed six errors in the game.

“I think fielding was probably the biggest issue of what we had going on,” BHS head coach Jonathon Qualls said. “The book only showed six errors, but I think we had a few more than that. If not, we definitely had more mental errors than that.”

The Wolverines didn’t score any runs in the top of the first, but managed to put up at least two in the second through fifth innings.

They allowed at least one run to Piedra Vista in every inning except the seventh, and the Panthers scored six runs in the bottom of the third.

Zane Phelps led BHS with three hits and three runs batted in on the day, including a triple and a home run.

Dillon Hoselton also had three hits while Trey Lange had two.

“We’ve been kind of living off of our offense so far this year, so it was kind of nice to get a lot of the guys going,” Qualls said.

The Wolverines struck out six times in the game and only walked once.

Hoselton, Lange and McGhehey all pitched for BHS, and Lange took the loss.
