BHS shuffles the deck

Wolverines’ reconfigured lineup finds the back of the net 6 times

It hasn’t mattered where the Bayfield Wolverines’ girls soccer players have lined up this season.

The result has been a win every time.

The Bayfield Wolverines (6-0, 5-0 3A Region 5) won the Pine River Rivalry game 6-0 against the Ignacio Bobcats (0-4, 0-4 3A Region 5) on Friday at Wolverine Country Stadium in Bayfield.

“I moved players all around. Forwards played defense and defenders played forward and midfield,” BHS head coach Jen Zelinski said. “I don’t have a lot of depth this year, so I am trying to figure out ways to use each person incase we need them in different places later in the year.”

Six different players accounted for the six BHS goals Friday. Brianna Martinez opened the scoring, and Meaghan Mooney scored the team’s second goal. Mooney also added two assists in the game.

Kate Brennan and Maddy Duran also scored in the first half for BHS as the Wolverines took a 4-0 lead into halftime. Duran scored on a free kick from outside the box.

Andrea Zelinski scored on a penalty kick in the second half. She drew the foul, and Coach Zelinski rewarded her with the penalty kick chance.

Grace Harvey scored the final goal of the game for BHS, and the Wolverines coasted to their sixth win in as many games.

“The girls are working great as a team. I can’t ask for any more,” Zelinski said. “To have six girls combine to score six goals, to me, that’s a team. There is not one person being selfish. It all goes to working hard, and this is their reward and payoff.”

Ignacio head coach Oscar Cosio was encouraged by his team’s effort, especially in the second half.

“We played tough. We tried a different formation, and the girls played well in it,” Cosio said. “We had our moments, but the good outweighed the bad.

“Bayfield has been tops in our league for five to six years. They are a good team, and Zelinski has those girls doing some great stuff. My girls understand what and who they are facing. I am really proud of our second-half performance.”

Cosio credited IHS goalkeeper Kristen Velasquez-Baker for making big saves to prevent the Bobcats from a 10-0 fate.

“She was the difference as far as not letting the score get out of hand,” Cosio said. “She made big time saves and was aggressive, and our defense buckled down, too.”

BHS goalkeeper Kailee Millard had to make only one save in the game.

“She is still young and new to the position, but she is working hard and loves the game,” Zelinski said of her goalie. “She has made some big saves this year when we need it, but our defense has stepped up so much that there isn’t much going on back there. Even when they get beat, they are fast enough to make up for it.”

Ignacio is off until 4 p.m. April 8 when it travels to Alamosa. The Wolverines also are off for spring break until 4 p.m. April 8 when they host Montezuma-Cortez. BHS also plays the Durango High School junior varsity team April 10.

“Hopefully that good competition helps get us ready for the big games later in the season,” Zelinski said.
