Demons cleared for takeoff

DHS jumpers hurdle the field for a boys and girls sweep

BAYFIELD

It was mission accomplished for the Durango High School track and field team at the Bayfield Quad on Saturday at Wolverine Country Stadium.

The Demons won both the boys and girls meets with 152.5 and 132 points, respectively, led by strong jumping performances in the field.

Gabi Razma improved her own school record in the triple jump, finishing first with a jump of 37 feet, 3 inches.

That jump was aided by too much wind to qualify for state and thus wouldn’t qualify for Durango’s records, but her previous jump of 36-2 would go down as the school record, DHS head coach David McMillan said.

“I’m so proud of it,” said Razma, daughter of Ed and Kristina Razma. “I’m so proud I could show what I can do and that I can bring a good name to my school.”

Liam O’Neil, a freshman, starred on the boys side, winning the triple jump with a 38-4.75 leap and finishing second in the long jump at 19-0.5.

“It felt really good,” said O’Neil, son of Carl and Joy O’Neil. “I got that first step, so now I can keep going up. I hope to achieve more.”

Shane Bisogno won the long jump for DHS at 20-1.

O’Neil also finished first in the 300-meter hurdles at 44.96 seconds.

With prom looming later Saturday night, McMillan turned most of the meet over to his younger athletes to give the upperclassmen time to get ready.

The youth movement showed its strength, picking up seven of the Demons’ 17 total wins.

Alli Davis put her stamp on the meet early and often. She won the 200-meter dash (27.45 seconds), 400-meter dash (59.23 seconds) and long jump (17-2.25).

Emily Edwards-Colsman finished first in the 800-meter run at 2:37.24.

Breann Hawman picked up the Demons’ only throwing event victory in the shot put with a throw of 30-6.

David Moening represented the boys side with a 24.24-second, 200-meter dash that finished first.

“I’m really happy with the way the young kids performed,” McMillan said.

Durango’s upperclassmen didn’t let the young guns take all the glory, however.

Shannon Maloney won the 1,600-meter run in 5:27.04, which was 26 seconds in front of her closest competitor.

Devin Lewis finished first in the boys 100-meter dash in 11.04 seconds.

Garrett Mulkey won the 800-meter run in 2:04.07, and Trent Andrews finished first in the 1,600-meter run at 4:48.11.

Durango’s relay teams also finished strong.

The 4x100 team of Bisogo, Lewis, Corbin Lyman and Justin Marcum won the event in 44.17.

The Demons’ 4x400-meter relay team of Bryan Dunlop, Matthew McLain, Martin Thompson and Joaquin Valdez finished first in 3:53.49.

“That was a totally untested four-by-four – probably our ‘C’ squad,” McMillan said. “They ran with tremendous purpose.”

McMillan said he hadn’t decided exactly who he would put on the team’s relay squads for the Arcadia Invitational in Los Angeles on Friday and Saturday, but that would be decided later in the week.

“Now comes the hard stuff,” he said. “My tendency is to reward the seniors.”

Bayfield High School

Saturday’s meet exceeded Bayfield head coach Sherry Kimball’s expectations.

The Wolverines’ boys team finished second behind Durango with 93 points, while the girls team placed third with 73.5 points.

“I think we had a really nice day – not just in our jumping events but in all our events; we had some really nice performances,” Kimball said.

Amy Roach edged teammate Ashlyn Schulder by .01 seconds for the 100-meter dash title in 13.95 seconds.

Nate Tate outlasted the field to win the 400-meter dash for the first time in his high school career.

“Coming around the corners, I could hear people behind me,” said Tate, son of Christina and Ron Tate. “I was like, ‘I’m not going to lose this one.’ Coming across the finish line without other people looking at you, it was a really good feeling.”

Trevor Gabbard blitzed the field from the beginning of the 3,200-meter run, winning it in 10:34.58, which was 40 seconds ahead of his closest competitor.

Katie Hawkins started a strong day for the BHS jumpers, taking the girls pole vault with a 7-foot, 9-inch jump.

Michael Voss won the boys pole vault at 13-3. He beat teammate John Arnold in a jump-off after neither of them could clear 13-6.

Aubry Brown won the boys discus throw with a heave of 139 feet, 11 inches.

Jessie Roukema helped lead both the 4x100-meter relay and 800 sprint medley relay teams to victory. The 4x100 team also included Amber Johnson, Amy Roach and Ashlyn Schluder and finished in 54.23 seconds. All four of them returned for the sprint medley to win in 2:06.49.

“Jessie Roukema had an amazing day,” Kimball said. “She (set a personal record) in the high jump at 4-11. ... She had a good day.”

Bayfield’s 4x200 relay team of Gabe Kaufmann, Samuel Kundrick, Brian Mashak and Tate finished first in 1:39.12.

“I was not expecting this many kids to be here,” Kimball said. “It made for a very nice meet.”

Ignacio High School

Mike Perez turned in the best performance of the day for the Bobcats: He won the boys 110-meter hurdles in 17.4 seconds.

“I’ve been working on my form a lot, which makes it easier to get over hurdles,” said Perez, son of Daniella and Miguel Perez. “Wrestling helped me keep in tip-top shape.”

IHS finished fourth in the boys team scoring with 28.5 points and fifth in the girls meet with 16 points.

The Bobcats’ girls 4x100-meter relay team of Amya Bison, DaShona Lloyd, Azala Perez and Savannah Turner came in second place in 56.16 seconds.

Savannah Turner came in third in the 100-meter dash at 14.13 seconds.

Christian Knoll picked up two third-place finishes, as well. He ran the 400-meter dash in 53.95 seconds and threw the discus 113-7.

The Bobcats’ 4x100-meter relay team of Wyatt Hayes, Knoll, Blaine Mickey and Perez finished in third place at 48.37 seconds.

“The kids that were here, I feel did very well,” IHS head coach Tony Kimball said.
