Highway curve proves deadly

Motorcyclist dies after missing turn, crashing on U.S. 160

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the cause of a fatal motorcycle crash Saturday near mile marker 121 on U.S. Highway 160, approximately 35 miles east of Durango.

Cpl. Heather Cobler, public information officer for the State Patrol, said the accident occurred at 3:52 p.m. Saturday when one motorcyclist in a group of four traveling east failed to negotiate a turn.

“He came off the left side of the road and crashed,” she said. “He was pronounced dead at the scene.”

No names have been released, but the deceased and other riders are all believed to be Colorado residents.

“We are investigating the possibility that alcohol may have contributed to this crash,” Cobler said.

She said it was unclear if the man struck anything when he left the road. None of the group was wearing a helmet, she said.
