Bayfield baseball batters Aztec

Zane Phelps hit his fourth home run of the season, and the Bayfield Wolverines routed Aztec 18-1 in five innings Saturday in New Mexico.

Bayfield High School (8-2, 3-0 Intermountain League) scored nine runs against the Tigers (5-13) in the first inning and seven more in the second inning to put the game away early.

“We put together a complete game. The whole lineup hit well, and we had big innings early,” BHS head coach Jonathon Qualls said. “Hitting, pitching and defense all came together for us.”

Phelps was 4-for-4 with three runs batted in to lead the Wolverines. He now is hitting .614 with 22 runs scored and 22 runs batted in.

Matthew Knickerbocker was 3-for-3 with one RBI, and Kelton McCoy went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Taed Heydinger, who closed the game on the mound for BHS, was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in the game.

Trey Lange was the winning pitcher. He threw four innings and gave up one run, while striking out four and allowing only three hits.

“We only had one or two errors, and that was great to see,” Qualls said. “(Saturday) also was Bayfield’s prom, so it made it even more fun for the guys to get on the bus and get back home early in a run-rule game.”

The Wolverines are back in action at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Montezuma-Cortez. They will resume IML play at 11 a.m. Saturday in a home doubleheader against Monte Vista.

“We keep building each day and one game at a time. Hopefully we will be playing our best baseball here in the next three weeks,” Qualls said.
