A busy offseason sees two more recruits

And then there were eight.

It’s been a busy offseason for the Fort Lewis College women’s soccer program.

After the release of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Sam Weiss, the Skyhawks played a couple of spring soccer games in Denver, then took in the Americans’ 2-0 international friendly victory over China in Commerce City in the women’s national team’s final game with Tom Sermanni as its head coach.

In between, FLC head coach Damian Clarke has signed eight players to national letters of intent. The most recent two were announced Monday: Angelica Duckworth and Morgan Honza.

Duckworth played for the No. 1 ranked high school in the country, St. Teresa’s Academy in Lee’s Summit, Mo., and her club team, Sporting Blue Valley, finished runner-up in the state championships.

“She is a very technical player who can play in a variety of positions from midfield to forward,” Clarke said in a news release to The Durango Herald.

Honza redshirted last year at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas.

“Morgan is the third player that we’ve signed form Texas in the last three years,” Clarke said. “We believe she will have a role in the back four. Morgan is a very good athlete who is tenacious and strong in the air.

“We’re excited about the fact that she comes from a DIII program that is a powerhouse.”

Duckworth and Honza join defense/midfielder Savannah Bowman from Colorado Springs; defender Miranda Brown from Monument; forward/midfielder Alicia Sanchez from Albuquerque; forward/midfielder Jessica Singleton from Hobbs, N.M.; midfielder Andra Thaden from Westminster; and defense/midfielder Kyleigh Wierenga from Colorado Springs.
