Bayfield greased Montezuma-Cortez before the Panthers’ trip to Durango on Thursday to face a team that just knocked off the No. 4 team in Class 4A baseball.
Class 3A Bayfield High School beat Montezuma-Cortez 16-2 on Tuesday in Cortez.
Bayfield scored six in the first, two in the second and eight in the third to run away with the non-conference victory. BHS had 18 hits in the win and no errors, compared to three by the Panthers.
Montezuma-Cortez scored two runs – both in the fourth inning – on five hits.
Matthew Knickerbocker earned the win for BHS with four innings pitched. Kelton McCoy relieved Knickerbocker for the final inning.
Taed Heydiner went 3-for-4 from the leadoff role, with three runs scored, a double and a run batted in.
McCoy was 1-for-4, with two runs scored and an RBI.
Zane Phelps was 1-for-3, with a run, a double and two RBIs.
BHS cleanup hitter Noah Loutherbeck was 2-for-2, with two runs scored, a sacrifice fly and two RBIs.
Brody McGhehey was 3-for-4, with two runs scored.
Anthony Chamblee was 1-for-3, with a walk and three runs scored.
Knickerbocker was 2-for-3, with a run scored and three RBIs.
Trey Lange was 3-for-4, with two runs scored and an RBI.
Colter McMenimen was 1-for-3, with an RBI.
BHS (9-2) next will play Ignacio (5-4) at 3 p.m. Thursday at IHS.
Montezuma-Cortez will play Durango (7-6) at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at DHS, the Demons’ senior day at Walden Memorial Field.
