Demons hang their hats on second

Waldo finishes All-SWL – top five – at the SWL Championships

Montrose played its home courses with aplomb to open up a sizable lead Day 1 of the Southwestern League Championships at Cobble Creek Golf Course on Monday in Montrose.

Kirk Rawles was hoping to hang on for a runner-up finish Day 2 at The Bridges on Tuesday in Montrose.

The Durango High School girls golf team did just that. Montrose shot 238-250–488 to win the SWL Championships, while the Demons finished 267-282–549 to finish second in the league.

“All in all, it was a pretty good two days,” said Rawles, the Demons’ sixth-year head coach.

“We held our position,” he said. “We didn’t move up; we didn’t move down.”

Individually, Brooke Kniffin struggled one day after a career best 86 and slipped to a 104. But teammate Riley Waldo picked her up with an 85 to pair with her 88 on Monday, and Waldo ended up in fifth place and on the All-SWL team.

Keselya Plewe of Dolores shot 78-81–159 to win medalist and SWL Player of the Year honors.

Plewe was followed by a trio of Montrose golfers, Rawles said.

“They’ve got a pretty deep team,” Rawles said of Montrose. “I’ve got three players, and if one doesn’t play well, then it’s tough for us to keep pace.”

The third, Natalie Lyon, shot a 93 on Tuesday.

The fourth, at least Tuesday at Bridges, DHS freshman Taylor Edwards, shot a 116 on varsity in only her fourth 18-hole round ever.

“At The Bridges at Montrose, that’s pretty phenomenal,” Rawles said. “I was really impressed with that round.”

Courtney Peterson shot a 120, and Katrina Chandler shot a 132 for Durango.

Grand Junction finished third.

Durango will play Conquistador on April 23 in Cortez, then will host the DHS Invitational on April 24 at Hillcrest Golf Club. Durango will pick up a round in Farmington, too, before regionals.
