Demons defeat No. 4 Delta

Blake Dunlap shuts down Panthers at DHS

Delta came to Durango with an 11-1 overall record and the No. 4 ranking in the CHSAANow.com baseball polls.

Delta left with its second loss of the season.

“No. 4 in the state, that’s a big win for us,” Durango High School baseball head coach Rob Coddington said.

Durango beat Delta 5-1 on Tuesday night at DHS.

Blake Dunlap threw a complete-game victory. He allowed one run on five hits, struck out six and went 1-for-3 on offense.

“He threw a lot of strikes,” Coddington said of the future Chico State signee. “He did a good job of shutting them down.”

Blake Dunlap was backed by brother Casey Dunlap, who went 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and two runs batted in.

Lawrence Mayberry went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs.

Tyler Worley returned from injury and went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of doubles in his first game of the season.

The big inning was three in the third on five hits, including two doubles.

“That got us going,” Coddington said.

Durango (7-6) will host Montezuma-Cortez at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, the Demons’ senior day at Walden Memorial Field on the DHS campus.
