Skiers slide in to play Demons

Durango hosts No. 4 Aspen in boys lacrosse

There would be no better way for the Durango Demons to burst onto the Class 4A boys lacrosse landscape than to beat Aspen.

The Aspen Skiers turn into Durango High School for a 4 p.m. game Friday. Aspen enters the contest with a 9-1 record and an unblemished 5-0 record in the Mountain League, giving the skiers sole possession of first place.

“We are definitely looking forward to that game, and it should be an epic test,” DHS head coach John Robinette said Saturday after his team beat Pueblo West 14-7 in the last of a four-game road trip.

DHS is coming into the game 5-2 with a 2-1 record in the Mountain League. Aspen is ranked No. 4 in the CHSAANow.com Class 4A poll this week, and the Demons would be ranked No. 11, if the poll went past 10 teams, after earning two votes.

A year ago, the Demons opened their season with the Skiers. Aspen won that game 21-3, and plenty of current Demons have vivid memories of that game, Robinette said.

“Aspen handed it to us last year, so we’ve got a chip on our shoulders going in against those guys,” Robinette said.

DHS averages 10 goals per game this season while allowing an average of less than 6.5 goals per contest. Aspen has outscored its opponents 151-55 in 10 games.

DHS junior Liam Millar leads the Demons in points with 13 goals and 11 assists. DHS seniors Jared Cook and Jacob Boyle lead the team in goals with 15 and 14, respectively.

Kyle Robinette, a freshman, has led the tea in groundballs three consecutive games. Boyle and Duncan Whitley lead the team in that category, and Kyle Robinette is third.

Walker Brown has been strong in goal for the Demons this year. He is 5-2 and has made saves on 62.1 percent of the shots he has seen. He allows an average of seven goals per game.

The Demons are fired up to play at home, and also will host Glenwood Springs at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“The kids can’t wait to play Aspen in front of their friends and family at home,” Coach Robinette said. “Then, Saturday, we have Glenwood Springs. They both will be huge challenges.”
