Bobcats settle for small victories

IHS girls soccer builds momentum with every goal scored

Every time the Ignacio Bobcats score a goal, it gives the team more and more confidence.

After scoring only three goals the entire 2013 season, Ignacio High School’s girls soccer team now has four goals in its last four games.

Though those goals haven’t translated into any victories, head coach Oscar Cosio said it is doing wonders for his team’s spirit.

“The goals have kept us going. The girls are excited, and everybody wants to play forward now and get in on the action,” Cosio said.

The Bobcats (0-8, 0-8 3A Region 5) lost 4-1 on Friday at Ridgway (3-5, 3-5 3A Region 5).

Cheyenne Cook, a senior, scored the goal for IHS.

“I think that is only the second or third goal in her career; it was great to see,” Cosio said. “She took the ball down the right side and made some great one-on-one moves. She got through and put a shot in the bottom right corner of the goal.”

IHS gave up 99 goals in 2013 and now have surrendered 51 this season, with just four games remaining on the schedule.

“We have cut the goals we have given up in half this season. We are still getting there and improving on defense, but it has been a dramatic improvement in goal differential this year,” Cosio said.

IHS will prepare to play four games in seven days, beginning with a game Tuesday at Telluride. The Bobcats will travel April 25 to Center before hosting Alamosa on April 26.

“It is going to be a busy week, but the girls are looking forward to it,” Cosio said.
