Wolverine Country Stadium to host its third track meet this season
Bayfield High School track and field head coach Sherry Kimball thinks Mikayla Westbrook and the Wolverines’ throwers may be on the verge of a breakout day Saturday at the Pine River Invitational at Wolverine Country Stadium. “I don’t want to jinx anything, though,” she said.

Competing at home has to be getting old for the Bayfield High School track and field team.

The Wolverines will host the Pine River Invitational, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, the third track meet at Wolverine Country Stadium this year.

“I think it’s a good thing to be able to compete at your own house,” BHS head coach Sherry Kimball said. “It’s hard work, but it makes a difference.”

BHS won the girls team title and took second on the boys side at Ignacio High School’s Abel Velasquez Invitational on April 12, and the Wolverines finished in the top three on both sides in their quad meet April 6.

Dolores, Ignacio, Mancos, Montezuma-Cortez, Pagosa Springs and Sanford are expected to attend Saturday’s meet.

The Wolverines competed Tuesday at Durango High School’s Ron Keller Invitational, finishing in the top three in both the boys and girls team standings.

“They’ve responded very well,” Kimball said of the team’s short break between competitions. “For the most part, they’re very focused. They’ve been working very hard to improve and get better.”

Four Wolverines won five events at the Ron Keller, led by senior Eva-Lou Edwards’ double in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

Katie Hawkins won the girls pole vault, while Nate Tate finished first in the 200-meter dash, and Michael Voss did the same in the boys pole vault.

“I think because of their focus, they’re looking forward to this meet,” Kimball said. “They want to prove something.”

She thought the throwers may be on the verge of a breakout day and said the girls 800 sprint medley relay has been focusing on its handoffs in order to make a push to qualify for state.

“I hate to jinx anything, though,” Kimball said.
