Cyclist stabbed on river trail, bike stolen

Sent to hospital with 9 wounds

A 24-year-old Durango resident was stabbed nine times when three assailants allegedly attacked him in Rank Park on the Animas River Trail near the 2200 block of North Main Avenue early Saturday morning.

Officers with the Durango Police Department found Daniel Craig lying down at approximately 2:55 a.m. near the Durango Youth Services building after he left the park where the incident occurred, said Lt. Ray Shupe, public information officer with DPD.

“Craig claimed that three dark-complected male individuals jumped him at Rank Park, which is across the street,” he said. “Apparently, they took his bike, and he was stabbed multiple times.”

Craig suffered two stab wounds to the inside of his left wrist, a stab wound on his right side on his lower hip, five stab wounds to his back and a stab wound on his lower left hip. He was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center.

“It was raining (Saturday night), so it was really difficult to collect any evidence,” Shupe said.

Craig was unable to give a detailed description of his alleged attackers but did say they spoke English and Spanish and left with his red and black bicycle.

Shupe said authorities were unsure where Craig was going or where he was coming from.

“It’s still early in the investigation,” he said.

Craig said he did not know his attackers, Shupe said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Trish Hutchens at 375-4733.
