Local connections at Boston Marathon

A slew of Durangoans and at least one former Durangoan are slated to run the Boston Marathon on Monday. The marathon was rocked by terrorist bombs last year that killed three and injured more than 260.

On Tuesday, a ceremony in Boston honored the victims. Also, the White House commemorated the occasion with a moment of silence at 2:49 p.m. Eastern time, the moment two bombs exploded near the finish line of the marathon last April 15.

The 118th running of the famed race has 36,000 entrants. Five Durangoans are on the race’s online start list: Amy Clark, David Hughes, Erin Hughes, Jay Johnson and Sarah Lockwood.

Lockwood ran the marathon last year but was unable to complete it. She was about three-quarters of a mile from the finish when the first bomb exploded. She was uninjured.

Also running is Adam Gallegos, a 1993 Durango High School graduate who now lives in Fort Collins. His parents, Bob and Betty Gallegos, still live in Durango. Adam Gallegos ran four years on the DHS cross country team.
