Lawrence Mayberry has pitched so well in recent weeks that head coach Rob Coddington handed him the ball to start Saturday.
The Durango High School sophomore rewarded his coach with a complete-game performance at Montezuma-Cortez. He gave up two runs – one earned – on 10 hits. He struck out two and walked only one as the Demons (9-6, 4-4 Southwestern League) claimed a 4-2 victory to earn a regular-season sweep of the rival Panthers (5-11-1, 0-8 SWL).
“Lawrence pitched a great game. We only had six hits as a team, but the defense was a lot tighter, and we are real proud of Lawrence,” Coddington said in a voicemail to The Durango Herald.
Mayberry also added a single that drove in a run in the fourth inning. His older brother, Isiah Mayberry, was 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Blake Dunlap was 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored, and he helped kick start the Demons to a two-run seventh inning to give the team a 4-1 lead.
“We did what we needed to do to get a win,” Coddington said.
DHS now has won four consecutive games and will hope to keep it going next weekend with two big games in the Grand Valley against Grand Junction Central on Friday and Grand Junction on Saturday.
