Knickerbocker does a bit of everything

Bayfield batters Monte Vista

Bayfield High School continued its torrid start to the baseball season Saturday.

The Wolverines (11-3, 4-0 Intermountain League) swept a league doubleheader at Monte Vista (3-8, 1-5 IML).

BHS saw two dominant starts out of their pitchers. Trey Lange threw a complete seven innings in Game 1, recording eight strikeouts and giving up only one earned run in a 9-1 victory.

Matthew Knickerbocker carried a perfect game through four innings in Game 2 before eventually giving up two hits in a 10-0 victory that was called after six innings due to the run-rule. Knickerbocker struck out eight in his six innings of work

“Lange and Knickerbocker definitely have established themselves as the top two guys in our rotation,” BHS head coach Jonathon Qualls said. “Both are going really good right now.”

BHS had two home runs in the first game with Knickerbocker and Zane Phelps each hitting long balls. Knickerbocker was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in to go with his solo-home run. Phelps was 2-for-4, and his home run was of the two-run variety.

Anthony Chamblee also went 3-for-4 with one RBI in the win.

In Game 2, Taed Heydinger was 4-for-4 with a triple. Knickerbocker went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

“It makes it a lot easier to play and coach a game when you score 10 runs. You don’t have to do a whole lot but let them go swing the bat,” Qualls said. “Really, our offense has been carrying us a lot of the season. The defense is catching up and playing good ball, and our pitching has really been solid the last couple of weeks now.”

BHS hosts a game at 3 p.m. Monday against Farmington High School’s junior varsity squad. The Wolverines are 2-1 against the New Mexico school’s JV team this year with 23-12 and 10-0 victories and a 4-3 loss.
