Errors are an IHS thing

Managing errors has gone a long way in determining losses and victories for the Ignacio High School baseball team this season.

The Bobcats followed that trend against Dolores on Tuesday in a doubleheader split on the road.

They lost the first game 8-6, committing four errors.

“A routine grounder that went between his legs, a fly ball that he caught and just dropped, stuff like that cost us five runs,” IHS head coach Lupe Huerta said.

IHS (8-6, 1-3 San Juan Basin League) trailed 8-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning when it scored five runs to narrow the gap.

The middle of the Bobcats’ order did most of the damage, Huerta said.

Tucker Ward started the game and took the loss, while older brother Bo Ward pitched the final two innings.

IHS bounced back in the second game with a 6-1 win. Ike Peña picked up the win for the Bobcats.

“We had a nice little talk after the first game,” Huerta said. “We said, ‘We gotta let things go.’ They did focus much better in the second game. Cut it down to one error.”

IHS will return home for a senior-day doubleheader against league-leading Nucla at 1 p.m. Saturday.
