DHS girls golf team entering a key stretch in and around Durango

A second-place finish at the Southwestern League Championships in Montrose has set the Durango High School girls golf team up to finish the regular season on a strong note.

They have three more tournaments before regionals May 5-6 in Fruita, starting Wednesday at the Cortez Invitational, played at Conquistador Golf Course.

“We’re just going to stay fine tuned,” DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said. “We’ve been working on different things to strengthen some weaknesses and strengthen everyone’s game.”

The Demons will follow that up with their annual Durango Invitational on Thursday at Hillcrest Golf Club.

It’s the only time this year that DHS will compete in Durango rather than climbing into a bus, which is a relief for Rawles.

“The last time I drove up to Montrose, I had to chain up the bus,” he said. “They have some ACT tests, so it’ll be nice not to have to travel very far in the next two weeks.”

DHS will close out its regular season Monday at the San Juan Country Club in Farmington for the Farmington Invitational.

“The next couple tournaments won’t be as big – not as many teams,” Rawles said. “It will be good for us to stay sharp. We’re not going to be so focused on scores, just trying to fine tune things and see if we can take it from the practice area to the course.”

He wants his team to develop a more rounded game, which largely means improving the short game – chipping, putting.

That’s not to say DHS is struggling, the Demons’ three lead players, Brooke Kniffin, Natalie Lyon and Reiley Waldo, all have notched their best rounds in high school play this season.

“We’re hoping to stay there or build on that,” Rawles said.
