DHS is prime-time ready

Boys lacrosse beats Bosque under the lights

Thursday night’s lacrosse game between Bosque (Albuquerque) and Durango High School showcased the best the Demons had to offer.

DHS (7-3) beat Bosque (0-2) 19-6 under the lights at DHS.

It was the first time DHS boys lacrosse ever had played a night game in head coach John Robinette’s five-year tenure.

“I loved playing under the lights,” said Trevor Gabbard, son of Joe and Kelly Gabbard. “It was awesome. We actually had a great crowd show up.”

The Demons started the show with four unanswered goals by four different players.

They would stretch that lead to 7-2 after the first quarter and 14-3 at halftime.

Eight different players scored for DHS in the first half.

“We’ve been trying to be as crisp as possible and keep the ball moving,” said Jared Cook, son of Bill Cook and Tamara Lazar. “We want to keep the movement and get it into everyone’s stick.”

Cook helped lead the charge with three goals in the game.

Gabbard also had three to tie for the team lead, the third of which put Durango up 15-3 with 9 minutes, 40 seconds remaining in the third period to start a running clock.

Three different Demons scored in the second half, pushing Durango’s total number of goal scorers up to 11.

“It makes my job as the feeder easier, because everyone’s a threat,” said Liam Millar, son of Lynn and Walter Millar. “I think it makes us a huge threat in this league now, because no one can take us lightly.”

DHS outshot Bosque 33-16 and picked up 40 groundballs compared to 14 for the Bobcats.

The Demons dominated the faceoff circle, winning 23-of-26, with Jacob Boyle taking all eight he attempted.

Hunter Hall went 5-0 on faceoffs, as well.

DHS goalie Walker Brown made eight saves in between the pipes for the victory.

Durango’s next two games definitely won’t be as easy, though.

DHS will host Grand Junction at 4 p.m. Friday and Battle Mountain at 11 a.m. Saturday.

DHS currently trails both teams in the Mountain League standings but could move into third place with two wins.

“I think we’re ready. We’re peaking at the right time,” coach Robinette said. “Grand Junction – and Battle Mountain – are teams we’ve never beaten as a varsity program. We feel the time is ready.”
