Curveball conditions

Rain, snow falls in S.W. Colorado

Have a nice flip-flop tan yet?

Colorado springtime weather is sort of a roll of the dice.

La Plata and Montezuma county residents were scrambling for snowshovels and raking snow from their rooftops after Saturday’s wintry weather brought nearly 10 inches of snow to areas near Mancos and 16 inches to the mountains north of Durango.

Mid-afternoon wind speeds hovered in the teens, but some gusts reached 36 mph.

“It was a good storm,” National Weather Service meteorologist Chris Cuoco said from Grand Junction. “It was one of those late-winter, early-spring storms.”

Durango saw high winds and snow flurries, some sticking in places, some not, but for the most part, it rained all over town.

“It was quite a mix of rain and snow,” Cuoco said, “With pileups of pretty good amounts of fairly heavy, wet snow in the higher elevations.”

Silverton received 7 to 10 inches of snow, and Coal Bank and Molas Pass saw 11 inches as of Sunday.

Cuoco said while Durango may be in the clear for a few days, these moody conditions will hang around, especially in higher elevations.

“Up the hills, they’re going to continue to get some snow in this northwest flow, behind the west side of the storm,” he said.

The weather service is calling for a windy day today, especially tonight, with weeknight lows in the 30s and highs in the low 60s all week, then a chance of rain Thursday, but it could be mostly sunny.

Maybe it’s just best to be ready for anything. It’s your roll.
