Luckily, this house fire was caught early

Fire detectors weren’t installed because of remodeling by owners

Firefighters with the Durango Fire Protection District fought a house fire near Montview Parkway and Forest Avenue in the Crestview neighborhood on Monday afternoon.

“We knocked it down pretty fast,” Durango Fire Protection District Fire Marshal Karola Hanks said. “The fire originated in the chase around the stovepipe and was just moving into the attic space when the crews got here.”

Firefighters were able to put the fire out before it moved into the attic, minimizing the fire’s damage.

The home, which belongs to the Andre Botha family, is undergoing a remodel, and the smoke detectors weren’t installed yet.

“We asked them to bring them back in just to be on the safe side,” Hanks said, “but we are letting them back in the house tonight.”

The return of colder weather may make it a little uncomfortable tonight, she said.

“Unfortunately, they won’t be able to use the fireplace insert,” Hanks said, “which they were using because the house’s other heating isn’t working very well.”

On the fortunate side, she said, the Bothas are insured.
