DHS track and field sets itself up for the state meet

Davis wins 3 events and sets a Demons’ school record in the 200-meter dash

The five-year reign over the Southwestern League is over for the Durango High School girls track and field team.

Fruita Monument won both the boys (160 points) and girls (126 points) meets.

The Demons won 10 events to finish second on the girls side and third on the boys side with 119 and 95 points, respectively.

“We had some real good competition,” DHS head coach David McMillan said. “I think the theme for our girls was we had a small team. On the guys side it was our youngsters. We had some strong freshmen and sophomores sticking their heads out.”

John Lee finished third in the boys 110-meter hurdles in 16.93 seconds.

“He’s a young track athlete, hasn’t had a consistent season yet,” McMillan said.

Devin Lewis won the boys 100-meter dash in 11.16 seconds.

The Demons’ boys 4x200-meter relay of Shane Bisogno, Lewis, Justin Marcum and David Moening finished first in 1 minute, 30.79 seconds.

Their boys 4x100-meter relay team of Bryan Dunlop, Corbin Lyman, Zeb Soignier and Joaquin Valdez was third in 47.19 seconds.

Alli Davis won the girls 400-meter dash in 59.48 seconds. Davis finished fourth in the girls 200-meter dash in 26.31 seconds after setting the DHS record in the prelims at 25.78 seconds.

Shannon Maloney took second in the girls 800 in 2:25.88.

Bisogno won the boys 200 in 23.08 seconds.

“Devin and Shane went out well as seniors,” McMillan said.

Hannah Peterson was second in the girls 3,200-meter run at 12:12.45.

Benjamin Lachelt was second in the boys 3,200 in 10:05.63 and Nicholas Turco third at 10:13.86.

Durango’s girls 4x400-meter relay of Miranda Gallegos, Shaylan Garrett, Jessica Lee and Gabi Razma took third in 4:19.4.

Davis and Razma went 1-2 in the girls long jump. Davis won with a school record leap of 18 feet, 2 inches, while Razma jumped 16-11.5. Razma won the triple jump with a jump of 34-09.5.

Breann Hawman finished second in the girls shot put at 31-06.5.

“Bre gathered herself after a shaky start,” McMillan said.

Davis continued her roll with a win in the girls high jump at 5-06.

“She just had an exceptional meet,” McMillan said. “What a coming-out parade for her.”

DHS swept both sides of the pole vault: Garrett was first on the girls side at 8-08, while Lee was second at 6-06.

“If we had another couple weeks in the season, she’d qualify for the state meet,” McMillan said of Garrett. “She’s (setting personal records) every week.”

Parker Norvell won the boys event at 11-10, with his teammates Matthew McLain and Marcum behind him in second and third at 9-04 and 8-04, respectively.

Durango next will compete at the Colorado High School Activities Association State Championships on Thursday through Saturday in Lakewood.

“We go to the state meet looking good. We’re going to be really competitive,” McMillan said. “We’ll probably end up with a bus-load of kids.”
