Skyhawks softball adds an arm and a bat to its 2014 recruit class

Zeiter goes to work on signings

Two days after the end of the season, Fort Lewis College wasted no time in announcing a pair of additions to next year’s softball team.

Rachelle Foos of Littleton and Alexis Murillo from Las Cruces, New Mexico both signed National Letters of Intent to join the FLC softball team.

Foos was an outfielder and pitcher and played four years at the varsity level for Dakota Ridge High School. She was named to the All-Colorado team twice along with first-team all-conference and conference Most Valuable Player honors in 2012.

Foos also is a star in the classroom, winning the Legacy of Excellence Award and Certificate of Academic Excellence.

FLC head coach Kira Zeiter said Foos will pitch for the Skyhawks, adding depth with Olivia Goldberg, Victoria Johnson, Kiley Raica and Katie Watkins all returning next season.

“We are thrilled to have Rachelle join our Skyhawks softball team,” Zeiter said in a news release. “She is a pitcher who we know will succeed in our conference; she has a great mix of pitches. She will fit right in with our team dynamic and will be a fantastic teammate.”

Murillo spent two seasons playing for Luna Community College in Las Vegas, New Mexico after graduating from Las Cruces High School. Murillo is a talented outfielder who won the Golden Glove award in her last two seasons of high school softball. She led the Las Cruces Bulldawgs, a top-tier Class 5A team in New Mexico, offensively in her sophomore and senior seasons.

“Alexis will add options at the plate from the left side,” Zeiter said. “She can hit, slap or bunt and put pressure on the base paths. She will add more depth to the outfield and bring more experience to the team.”

FLC lost a star outfielder, Destinee DeHerrera, in the middle of the 2014 season. Kaitlyn Bending and Missy Fundora return next season as starting outfielders.

FLC finished the 2014 season 26-29 overall and 19-19 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Skyhawks finished in second in the conference tournament.
