Durango teenager goes to Hungary

Seamus Millet competing in pentathlon
Durango High School sophomore Seamus Millett, 15, son of James Millett and Jennifer Thurston, currently is in Budapest, Hungary, representing the United States in pentathlon in the 2014 Youth World Championships.

A Durango High School sophomore with a 4.0 grade-point average has more than an academic side to him.

Seamus Millett, 15, is in Budapest, Hungary, representing the United States in pentathlon in the 2014 Youth World Championships.

Seamus is participating in individual, mixed (boys and girls) and relay competitions in fencing, running, shooting and swimming.

The modern pentathalon consists of the epee discipline in fencing, a 200-meter freestyle swim, a 400-meter show jumping course with 12 to 15 jumps on horseback and a combined running and shooting event in which competitors run 3,200 meters and fire laser pistols at 10-meter targets.

In the modern pentathlon, competitors younger than 18 years old don’t do equestrian events for liability reasons.

Seamus went to Cuba last summer to compete in pentathlon events, as well.

He next will compete in individual events starting at 9 a.m. Friday Budapest time.

The competition is being streamed live at www.pentathlon.org. On the right side of the screen, scroll down to UIPM_HQ and click bit.ly/QIT09N to view it.

Budapest is nine hours ahead of Colorado. So a 9 a.m. start there is midnight in Colorado.

Seamus, a member of the Durango Swim Club who also competes for the Demons’ cross country and track teams, will compete in the mixed events Monday, starting at the same time.
