Fair and equal are not synonymous

Kudos to Mike Sigman (Herald, April 23) for his letter concerning the unequal pay myth, and the Herald’s editorial on the subject. President Barack Obama repeats the idea that women earn only 77 percent of what men make. This idea has been debunked a multitude of times. Even his Department of Labor has the percent at a higher rate.

But when has the president ever let the truth get in the way of his divisive rhetoric? Jay Carney had to use the same examples (flex hours, fewer hours, etc., so that family concerns can be handled; very noble of ladies to put their family first), as Sigman pointed out, and more, to explain the disparity in earnings between male and female staff at the White House.

A history lesson for the Herald: In 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed into law the Equal Pay Act (opposed by nine Democrats), which prohibits companies having different pay scales for the same job. If this were happening now, the victim could sue the pants off his or her employer, so no new law is needed.

If the Herald is so concerned with this matter, perhaps when Mark Udall comes to town to campaign, he will be asked by the paper why there is a $9,700/year discrepancy between his male and female staff.

Now, let’s look at one more left divisiveness and the phony war on women: Nancy Pelosi’s idea that it’s not right that women pay more for health care than men. What she fails to point out is that women see their doctors 33 percent more than men, so they use their health care more, consequently, they should pay more. Women pay less for car insurance because they are safer drivers, thus use their auto insurance less. They also pay less for life insurance because they live longer. Should they have to pay more to balance the premium costs? No, of course not, so we see that fair and equal are not necessarily synonymous.

Most politicians are lawyers, and perhaps they should practice what is said in courts: “Tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”
