A title twice as nice

Edwards repeats as state champion while BHS breaks three records
Dallas Frisbie and Peak to Peak celebrated a 3,200-meter relay victory Day 1 of the CHSAA Class 3A Track and Field State Championships on Thursday at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood. Eva-Lou Edwards of Bayfield High School celebrated a 3,200 victory, too; the BHS senior defended her state championship in the 2-mile and didn’t lose a single 3,200 this season.

Barely anyone could keep up with Eva-Lou Edwards during her senior season.

The Bayfield High School distance runner repeated as the state champion in the Class 3A girls 3,200-meter run at the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A Track and Field State Championships on Thursday at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.

Edwards finished in 11 minutes, 6.15 seconds, which was five seconds ahead of her closest competitor.

“She ran a really smart race, and she looked strong the whole way,” BHS head coach Sherry Kimball said. “There was never any doubt from the first lap on.”

Edwards didn’t finish anything but first in the 3,200 all season and didn’t lose a single race during her cross country season in the fall, either; that feat was matched from her junior season, too.

She still has the 1,600-meter run to go, Saturday in Lakewood.

Bayfield’s girls 800-meter sprint medley relay finished 14th in 3A in 1 minute, 55.51 seconds in prelims, which did not qualify for the finals but did break a 30-year-old school record.

The Wolverines’ boys 4x200-meter relay finished eighth in 3A in the prelims at 1:33.17, qualifying them for Friday’s finals and also breaking the school record.

“It’s just what you work for,” Kimball said. “You build up so they peak at the right time.”

BHS won two out of the top four spots in the 3A boys pole vault: Michael Voss finished second at 13 feet, seven inches, and Tyler Meyers was fourth at 12-07.

Eaton’s David Jones, who won the event also at 13-07, had one less miss than Voss to win the championship.

Bayfield’s John Arnold, the top overall seed in the event at 14-03, did not start because of an injured hamstring.

“He tried to go, but he couldn’t get off the ground,” Kimball said. “That was a really tough deal.”

Aubry Brown was 13th in the 3A boys discus throw at 136-04.

Jessie Roukema was given a “no-height” in the 3A girls high jump.

Pagosa Springs’ Taylor Strohecker won the event at 5-06.

BHS freshman Brian Mashak was 15th in the Class 3A boys 200-meter dash preliminaries at 23.74 seconds, keeping him from the state finals.

Jessica Cusick was ninth in the 3A girls 400-meter dash at 1:00.1, which put her into the finals. That time also broke her own school record.

BHS will return to competition at 9:53 a.m. Saturday for the boys 4x100-meter relay Day 2 of the state meet.
