No. 1 jumps 1 inch short

The long buildup to the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A Track and Field State Championships finally ended for Durango High School and at least some of the Demons’ 15 competitors.

DHS began competition Thursday at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.

Alli Davis, a DHS freshman, finished second in the Class 4A girls high jump at 5 feet, 3 inches after entering the event as the No. 1 overall seed, the Demons’ first No. 1 seed at the state championships since Mark Cutter in the 110 hurdles in 2000.

“That was a good showing. No one jumped particularly well,” DHS head coach David McMillan said. “She did a good job keeping herself together and competing.”

Thompson Valley senior Lindsey Kroboth beat her by one inch.

Gabi Razma was ninth in the 4A girls triple jump at 35-03.25.

Eagle Valley’s Michelle Carbajal won at 36-10.75.

Durango’s girls 4x800-meter relay team finished 16th in 10 minutes, 9.78 seconds.

Mountain View was first at 9:15.48.

The Demons’ girls 800 sprint medley team finished 11th in the preliminary heats at 1:51.00, which did not qualify the relay for the finals but did break its own school record.

The Demons’ boys 4x200-meter relay team squeaked into finals, finishing ninth in 1:30.58.

“There was a particularly strong leg by Shane Bisogno to get us into the finals,” McMillan said.

DHS came in fourth in the boys 4A 4x800-meter relay at 8:00.73.

“Just a superb effort,” McMillan said. “Every time they raced toward the end of the season, they got better and better – just missed the school record by four-tenths (of a second).”

Broomfield won in 7:55.49.

Devin Lewis finished 12th in the boys 100-meter dash in 11.33 seconds.

DHS is back in action Day 2 at state at 9:08 a.m. Friday for the boys 4x100-meter relay prelims.
