Sen. Bennet comes to the rescue for area business

Economic hardship caused by pass rockslide to be eased with loans
Bennet

U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colorado, is offering economic relief for small businesses and nonprofits affected by January’s Red Mountain Pass rockslide in the form of a loan.

The Economic Injury Disaster Loan, issued by the Small Business Administration, will have low-interest fees. Businesses and organizations in Ouray, Gunninson, Hinsdale, Montrose, San Juan and San Miguel counties are eligible to apply, according to a news release issued Friday afternoon by Bennet’s office.

“Red Mountain Pass is an important route for folks in Southwest Colorado, especially for people doing business in the region,” Bennet said. “With limited traffic passing through town while repairs are completed, businesses continue to face tough times. Business and other organizations pay their bills and meet their obligations while things get back to normal.”

Small businesses, agricultural cooperatives and most private nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply for the disaster loan.

The pass was closed for weeks over the winter as crews worked to mitigate a Jan. 12 rockslide south of Ouray.

U.S. Highway 550 over Red Mountain Pass is currently scheduled to be closed Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. through Thursday.
