Inflatable Rodeo set for June 8

Rodeos aren’t just for the fairgrounds.

Mild to Wild Rafting and Jeep Trails Tours Inc. will host the fifth annual Inflatable Rodeo on June 8 as part of the 2014 Animas River Days, which runs June 5-8. Participants will have to choose a flotation device – ranging from duckies, rafts to inflatable dinosaurs – and surf.

On the list of new events this year is the Inflatable Downriver Relay Race, which also will be June 8. This event consists of three to four participants racing with inflatable tubes, rafts and kayaks from 29th Street to Santa Rita Whitewater Park.

“A festival like this is sure to draw river enthusiasts and anyone looking to enjoy our beautiful river in Durango,” Alex Mickel, owner of Mild to Wild Rafting and Jeep Trail Tours Inc., said in a news release Thursday. “We hope to have a great turnout for the Inflatable Rodeo this season and look forward to the innovative ways folks will (attempt to) use to surf Clock Tower Rapid.”

Registration for the Inflatable Rodeo will begin at noon June 8 at Santa Rita Park. Registration for the Inflatable Downriver Relay Race will begin at noon at 29th Street. Both events are expected to begin at 1 p.m. from their respective starting places.

Animas River Days is organized by local river-runners to celebrate the role the Animas River plays in the community.
