Comment period open on thinning project

Fuel reduction in Columbine District

The U.S. Forest Service is soliciting comment on a draft environmental assessment covering a fuels reduction project on more than 13,000 acres in the Fosset Gulch and northern HD Mountains region.

Mechanical and manual methods plus prescribed burning will be used. About nine miles of road and four miles of overland travel would be involved.

The project is expected to take several years.

Maps and the text of the environmental assessment is at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/sanjuan/projects .

The project falls under Objection Regulations standards, which means that in order to object to the project, a person must have previously submitted written comments during specific periods.

Information is available from project leader Craig Sullivan at 884-1422.
