Durango Roller Girls inducted into association

The Durango Roller Girls have finally made it to the big leagues, literally:

Last week, the all-women team was officially inducted as a full member into the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, an association of women’s flat track roller derby leagues from across the world.

Brooke “Tuberookulosis” Frazer, who heads up the Durango Roller Girls’ recruitment efforts, called the news “amazing.”

In a Friday evening interview, Frazer said the Durango Roller Girls will celebrate the accomplishment this weekend at a scrimmage and fundraiser for their teammate “Machete,” aka Abbey Smith, 31, who almost died from a heart attack while at a derby practice in late May.

The festivities and money drive will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at Chapman Hill Ice Rink.

As a new Class C member, the Durango Roller Girls will enjoy all the benefits of full WFTDA membership, including competing in sanctioned games and becoming eligible for rankings.

According to the WFTDA, there are fifteen other new members, failing from all over the world, including Finland, the United Kingdom and Australia.
