CDOT working to improve area the subject of 30 collisions in 10 years

Safety improvements at the intersection of Colorado Highway 172 and La Plata County roads 311 and 513 in unincorporated Oxford is moving along with funding from the county, the state and the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program.

The project is important. The Colorado Department of Transportation reports the intersection has seen 30 collisions in 11 years, from Jan. 1, 2003 to Dec. 31, 2013.

Nineteen collisions involved property damage, 10 involved injuries and there was one person killed, according to a county newsletter.

Among the collisions, were three rollovers and three broadsides, nine rear-enders and five sideswipes. Twenty occurred in daylight hours, and 28 involved a dry road surface.

The project underway will increase sight distance for drivers entering or crossing Highway 172 from the county roads, the newsletter says.

The cost of the project, being done by Elam Construction, is $3.2 million.

The state Department of Local Affairs is contributing $600,000; La Plata County is putting in $349,000; CDOT is paying $225,100; and the Highway Safety Improvement Program’s share is slightly more than $2 million.
