Funding available for new health centers

The federal government is making funding available for new community health centers.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services could award $100 million in grants for new centers in Colorado and around the U.S. Applications are due by Aug. 20. The money comes from the 2010 Affordable Care Act.

Colorado has already received $172,883,578 for health center services and construction, including support for 11 new health centers in the state because of the new health care law, a news release said. New health center sites will increase access to primary health care services in the communities that need it most.

“Coloradans turn to their local community health center for vital health care services that help them lead healthy, productive lives,” HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell said in the news release. “That’s why it’s so important that the Affordable Care Act is supporting the expansion of health centers in Colorado.”

Currently, 180 service delivery sites provide care to 494,081 patients in Colorado.

Health centers are also helping the public learn about new coverage opportunities under the Affordable Care Act by linking residents to health insurance options available through the state’s online marketplace.

“Since last fall, health centers have provided enrollment assistance to more than 131,547 Coloradans,” said Mary K. Wakefield, administrator of the Health Resources and Services, in the release. “We are pleased that the Affordable Care Act is supporting the establishment of additional health center sites in Colorado to provide expanded opportunities for the newly insured to receive care.”
