DHS theater students shine

Durango High School theater students won high honors nationally through the Educational Theatre Association in late June.

They were under the guidance of Kristen Winchester-White, a fourth-year theater teacher at DHS.

Competition in performance – singing, dancing and acting – and behind-the-scenes technical skills start at state level.

Top local performers then go on to be judged by Broadway professionals in a national competition.

Emma Buchanan, who will be a senior this year, was among four singers chosen as the best in the nation. Emma’s solo was “Even Though” from the musical “I Love You Because.”

Kevin Brinkley, who graduated this year, won a scholarship to the school of his choice for his technical skills in theater lighting.

The DHS technicians as a team were recognized as the seventh best in the country.

Winchester-White said it’s not 100 percent certain, but she wants to enter her students’ performance of “Les Misérables” in competition next year.

It would be a huge undertaking involving 100 participants as well as set building, she said.
