Free CPR group training

Heart Safe La Plata is offering 30-minute cardiopulmonary training free to groups such as homeowners associations, workplace wellness teams, church and youth groups, and civic organizations.

It would be convenient to have no more than 20 people in a group, said Barbara Lawson of Heart Safe. The reason is that the organization has 20 Mini Anne mannequins on which participants practice while following a 22-minute DVD.

The DVD includes information on child CPR, choking and automated external defibrillators.

The training is offered through the American Heart Association Family and Friends CPR Anytime program.

More than 80 percent of cardiac arrests occur in the home, Lawson said. Properly performed, CPR can up to triple the survival rate.

The training doesn’t earn participants certification, Lawson said. Certification requires a three- to four-hour class, but the training protects emergency CPR performers under good Samaritan laws.

Groups interested in the training may call Mike Brace at 946-5090.
