Parade nearly doubles in size

For first time, winners get money
Members of the Durango Choral Society sing to spectators during this year’s Fourth of July Parade as their float, which won the Best Musical Entry, moves down Main Avenue.

The Fourth of July parade, organized by the Durango Business Improvement District and a citizens committee, attracted nearly 50 entries.

It was nearly twice as big as last year, according to Tim Walsworth, BID’s executive director.

Organizers estimated the crowd in downtown Durango in the thousands, but no official count was made.

Entries ranged from youth soccer teams to families to local businesses. In an effort to make the parade bigger and better, BID put up prize money for the best entries.

The winners:

Best Activity Entry – Team Biker Babes.

Best Business Entry – Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.

Best Civic Entry – Fort Lewis College.

Best Community Group Entry – Durango Old Car Club & Southwest Street Rodders.

Best Music Entry – Durango Chorale Society.

Most Patriotic Entry – Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4031.

Best Youth Entry – Youth Baseball of Southwest Colorado.

Judges Choice – Grand marshals Lanny and Tracy Barnes, driven by Derrill Macho’s 1965 red convertible Mustang with Silver Star recipient from the Vietnam War Ron Bishop.

The citizens committee that helped BID organize the parade was comprised of Karen Thompson, Chris Warren, Mike Hudson, Justin Otto and Walsworth. Judges for the parade were Ann Butler, Ted Holteen, Jack Llewellyn and Walsworth.
