Solar-panel project to benefit low-income families

Volunteers will install rooftop solar panels on a family home Saturday as part of the Colorado Solar Road Show.

GRID Alternatives, based in Oakland, California, will work with staff members of the Four Corners Office for Resources Efficiency, La Plata Electric Association board members, community volunteers and members of the recipient family to install the solar panels.

The house is at 10 Rio Vista Circle in Durango. Work is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. An open house is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. with a talk by Michael Rendon, chairman of he La Plata Electric Association board.

GRID Alternatives is a nonprofit that brings solar technology to low-income families.

This is the first GRID Alternatives project in the region and will provide $20,000 in direct financial savings to the recipient family.
