Man pleads guilty for collision

March case involved driver driving under the influence

A Santa Fe man pleaded guilty Friday to vehicular assault and admitted he was driving under the influence when he hit another vehicle head on in March.

Brian Strittmatter, 29, pleaded guilty before 6th Judicial District Judge William Herringer. He must return to court Sept. 12 for sentencing.

Meanwhile, he must be evaluated by probation officials, who will send a report to Herringer.

If Herringer rejects probation, Strittmatter can withdraw his guilty plea and stand trial. The sentence for vehicular assault calls for 1 to 6 years in prison, depending on the circumstances.

Strittmatter was represented by Sara Hildebrand from the state public defender’s office.

In the March 12 accident, which occurred about 8:30 p.m. on Florida Road near Chapman Hill, Strittmatter’s 2002 Subaru crossed the center line and struck a 1993 Nissan truck driven by Mark “Downtown Steve” Brown.

Both men, who suffered serious injuries, were taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center. They were in fair condition that evening.
