Firefighters contained the KV Fire on Friday between Bayfield and Pagosa Springs in the San Juan National Forest.
The lightning-ignited fire, burning about 1½ miles north of U.S. Highway 160 up First Fork Road, started Wednesday night and was estimated to be about 10 acres, according to a news release from Ann Bond, spokeswoman with the U.S. Forest Service.
On Thursday, she said a plume of smoke could be seen from the highway where it crosses the Piedra River, but visibility was not hampered.
The Lower Piedra Campground was evacuated as a precaution.
Air tankers used Thursday, which provided air support to firefighters building containment lines along the perimeter of the fire, were released. On Friday, a helicopter continued to provide air support to the estimated 45 firefighters building the containment lines.
Higher humidity also aided the effort in containing the fire, Bond said.
