Property tax revenue declines $15M

County staff meeting to discuss current finances, direction

La Plata County staff members have scheduled a public meeting to kick off the county’s 2015 budget process.

Residents are welcome to attend the July 23 meeting and offer comments. Staff members will give a presentation about the county’s current financial position and the direction the county is heading in creating its 2015 budget, a news release said.

County Manager Joe Kerby said staff members will develop the budget to reduce operating expenses and align resources with county goals.

“Our property tax revenues have declined by approximately $15 million since 2010,” Kerby said in the news release. “Although we are optimistic about our revenues increasing in 2015, it does not come close to offsetting the significant decrease in property taxes we have experienced over the last four years.”

The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. July 23 in the commissioners’ meeting room at the La Plata County Courthouse.
