Our very own Ska Brewing in spotlight

Scottish beer-makers to highlight company on Esquire Network

Ska Brewing Co. will appear on the Esquire Network show “Brew Dogs” on Wednesday.

The show is hosted by James Watt and Martin Dickie, co-owners of BrewDog, a craft brewery based in Ellon, Scotland.

A preview for the episode featuring Durango and Ska shows the two Scotsmen firing a revolver in an Old West scene, playing the local dice game Klackers at Ska and visiting Mesa Verde National Park. The episode shows various sites around town, including Durango Diner. Ska is the featured brewery.

“It was pretty fun,” said Dave Thibodeau, president of Ska Brewing. “They both have a really dry sense of humor. You couple that with their Scottish accents, and I could never tell if I was laughing with them or they were laughing at me.”

Watt and Dickie were in town in April, he said. They brewed a small batch of a one-off beer together using unusual ingredients and techniques.

“Let’s just say it’s an ancient ale for a modern palette,” he said.

BrewDog is part of a wave of European craft brewers who have taken their cues from America’s burgeoning craft-brewing industry. BrewDog also has a string of pubs in Europe and South America. The Scottish brewery is perhaps best known for brewing what it claims is the strongest beer ever, a 32 percent alcohol by volume ale named Tactical Nuclear Penguin.

The episode will air at 9 p.m. Wednesday on the cable channel. Ska will host an early showing at 6 p.m.
