Funding available for community programs

The city of Durango is accepting applications for 2015 community support funding.

Community support money is available to nonprofits that address societal issues, such as the La Plata County Humane Society and La Plata Youth Services. The city also gives out block grants for Human Services, economic development and sustainability.

More than $760,000 was awarded for local programs and services this year, according to the city’s 2014 budget. The Humane Society, which was awarded $91,580 for 2014, is an open-admission animal shelter that works to get homeless dogs adopted.

Youth Services got $76,500 to help kids at risk of landing in the justice system. The city gave $149,527 to the detoxification treatment center run by Axis Health System, a nonprofit corporation that provides mental health, substance abuse treatment and primary care services.

Local groups must be a certified non-profit in good standing and provide services to city residents to be eligible, a news release said.
