Railroad buffs to work on Emma Sweeney

Members of the Durango Railroad Historical Society are scheduled to do restoration work Tuesday and Friday on the Emma Sweeney, a replica of an 1899 Rio Grande Southern Railroad steam locomotive used in the movie “A Ticket to Tomahawk” that was filmed in Durango and Silverton in 1949.

The Emma Sweeney also was used in the “Petticoat Junction” television series filmed in Durango and Hollywood.

The work will be done from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day in Santa Rita Park where the Emma Sweeney has been on display.

The Durango Railroad Historical Society acquired the full-sized model in August 2011 from Amador County in California.
