How hot was it? We tied a record

At 95, Tuesday was hottest day of the year
High temperatures in Durango on Tuesday provided an incentive for many to lounge on the shores of the Animas River behind Durango High School.

The thermometer registered 95 degrees Tuesday in Durango, tying the record high for the date while also setting a high for the year.

It matched the record set in 1982, said Joe Ramey, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

The all-time record for the official site at the Durango-La Plata County Airport was set in 1989 with a high of 102 degrees, Ramey said.

“It’s getting warm, but not that warm,” he said.

Local heating and air-conditioning company Garrhs Inc. always experiences a surge in business when temperatures begin to climb, said office manager Karen Roeder, partially for service and partially for installing air-conditioning systems.

This year, business picked up at the beginning of June, Roeder said.

“We are very busy,” she said.

Lane Salazar, an employee at Baskin-Robbins, said the ice-cream shop has been flooded since the warm weather began.

“When it’s very sunny and warm outside, there are a lot of people who come in to get ice cream,” Salazar said.

Durango is underneath a high-pressure system, which explains the heat, especially if there is no moisture in the air, which is what happened Tuesday, Ramey said.

The warm weather of the last few weeks in Durango is expected to decrease 5 to 7 degrees within the next couple of days, Ramey said.

“We are having a moisture surge up from the Southwest as early as tonight,” he said Tuesday.

Increased clouds and showers should knock the temperature down, he said.
